Vic MacDonald's Prospecting Tips. ( what you need! )

  • Metal Detector ( top brand)
  • Headphones
  • Pick ( small or large to suit your needs and detector. )
  • Magnet ( strong, for picking out steel or iron )
  • Plastic plate or plastic lid ( ice cream container etc. )
  • Spare batteries
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Wide brimmed hat or legionnaires cap
  • Wide, strong belt ( to carry water bottle and pick
  • Water bottle
  • Good walking shoes ( hiking or ex army to protect ankles )
  • Compass
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle, mirror, sunscreen
  • Matches, lighter, pocket knife
  • Insect net for face
  • Leg gaiters
  • Back pack
  • Bag for rubbish
  • Large and small plastic bags to put your gold nuggets in!
  • Epirb, two way radio, GPS.

Some other things you may need, but can leave back at camp include a second metal detector, a battery charger, and a second set of headphones.

Be sure to always tell someone, (usually the field officer on club trips ) which direction you intend going in and the approximate time you will be out. Take plenty of water and always take note of landmarks.( hills, creeks, distinctive trees and especially the direction of the sun. )

Remember it is easier to get lost than to find someone who is.
